If you are looking to venture away from the casino properties, top on your list needs to be The National Golf Club of Louisiana. It also hosted the 2022 Lake Charles Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour. Highlighted by beautiful views of the lake and the impressive Golden Nugget casino in the background, The Country Club was named the No.1 course in Louisiana in GolfWeek’s Best of 2021. Arguably the best golf course in the region, The Country Club was designed by famed architect Todd Eckenrode and opened in 2016. Just across the parking lot from Contraband is The Country Club at the Golden Nugget. Stretched out to just under 7,100 yards from the back tees, Contraband Bayou is consistently named as one of the “Best Places to Play in Louisiana” by GolfWeek Magaine, and was ranked as the 9th Best Golf Course in the entire state by Golf Digest.
Tied into L’Auberge, Contraband Bayou GC is a beautiful Tom Fazio-designed course that boasts fairly wide and forgiving fairways and few forced carries, but is surrounded by waterways and marsh areas, presenting plenty of challenges for all levels of golfer.

The two crown jewels of the Lake Charles area are located right next to eachother on the properties of the L’Auberge and Golden Nugget casinos – Contraband Bayou Golf Club and The Country Club at The Golden Nugget. This is a golf trip we are talking about, right, so we are mostly interested in the golf courses – and for a city that plays second and third fiddle to places like New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Lake Charles has just what the golfer needs. It’s a state where every where you look you’ll find the best cajun and seafood you’ve ever eaten! Throw in a couple local breweries and distilleries like Bayou Rum and Yellowfin and you can keep your stomach happy for as long as you are there. Hungry – come on, it’s Louisiana! Home of the crawfish boil and the po’boy. There are also the Sabine and Lacassine National Wildlife Refuges just south of the city. There are dozens of excellent freshwater fishing spots throughout the area, as well as boat and marshland tours and deep-sea fishing expeditions in the Gulf. And our neighbor to the East, Louisiana, has the golf, nightlife, restaurants and culture for the perfect golf trip, all within a couple hours’ drive. What often goes overlooked, however, are the places right in our own (figurative) backyard. In the end, more often than not all that planning and leg work is worth it, but it can be draining, and result in fewer golf trips than we all might prefer. When searching for (or being asked about) great golf travel locations, the heavy hitters that often come up – the Pinehursts and Pebble Beaches and Kiawah Islands of the world – require a boat load of planning, an incredibly long lead time and, in most cases, at least one rather lengthy (and costly) plane ticket (or two if you are making the big trip over the pond).Ī golf trip can be an ordeal – you have to coordinate hotel rooms and tee times and course availability, not to mention finding extracurricular post-round activities, renting cars, dealing with weather and finding places to eat that don’t cost an arm and a leg.
